Meet the Artist

Liza Hamilton

Most known for life-size needle felted creations, stop-motion ‘Feltimations’, and new Tufted Wool Artworks, Liza has been working with wool for over a decade.

After learning the art of felting in 2007 while attending the ‘New Hampshire Institute of Art’, from Fiber Artists Beth & Larry Beede, Liza has been exploring the sculptural and functional qualities of wool ever since.
Having grown up in the woodlands of West Newbury, Massachusetts, Liza now resides on the Southern Oregon Coast with her artist husband, Johan Ziems.

Liza now has a collection of lost-wax cast sculptures under her belt, with new sculptures being cast at Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, CA. The largest bronze sculpture being ‘Momentum’ a leaping antlered, elegant beast, and a limited edition of 12.

About Liza’s Process

Each of Liza’s needle felted wool sculptures is a completely one-of-a-kind work of fine art created of solidly felted wool fibers over a posable wire armature. There are no patterns, sewing, or stuffing involved with needle felting, where a special barbed tool is used to compact the wool into solid, densely tangled forms. Liza has been teaching the art of felting to adults and youth since 2009, and her students have achieved great success in her classes.

Bronze casting involves first sculpting in solid wax or clay and taking a mold from which a foundry can reproduce the sculpture into metal. The lost-wax casting process hasn’t changed much since the stoneage!

The smaller, one-of-a-kind bronze sculptures were cast individually by Liza without the use of molds. ‘Momentum’, the first large-size bronze sculpture by the artist, was cast at Artworks Foundry in Berkely, California.

Liza resides in Ashland, Oregon, where she teaches classes, and has artwork on display at the Ashland Art Center, and Shepherds Dream in downtown Ashland.
